A search strategy
Technosignatures are proposed observable traces of technology. Radio emissions are one target; researchers also consider atmospheric industrial chemicals and unusual energy use.
A detection needs context
An unusual signal must be checked against interference, instrumental effects and natural sources. Repeat observations and independent instruments can make an interpretation more testable.
What a non-detection means
Searches cover limited places, times and signal types. Their constraints apply to the searches performed; they do not establish that intelligence is absent everywhere.
