What the research addresses

The SETI Institute describes radio and optical searches for possible technological signals. Radio astronomy provides instruments and measurements; SETI adds hypotheses about signals that technology might produce.

What this does not establish

A narrowband or unexpected signal is a candidate observation. Repeatability, provenance and alternatives must be evaluated before inferring a distant transmitter.
